 LMASD Science Unit: Lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, pollution, recycling Learning Goals: Students will understand what makes up and ecosystem and the impact of pollution and recycling.

 Students will research, learn, understand, and teach about a specific recycling material given to their group using a presentation form of multimedia.

 Trade books on recycling. There are many titles that could be used. We used:  Laptops or computers with internet access available for each group. Approximately 5 or 6 total.  Projector or Smart board for students to use for final presentation.  Art Supplies to make any extra props/costumes, etc.

 This project provides opportunities for all types of learners throughout the whole process. It is flexible so that any extra ideas or information can be added. This project also can be modified for students that don’t have multimedia expertise. Instead these students could do their research, write it down, and others could insert it in. All students in the classroom contributed a key aspect to their group project.

 The teacher will introduce project and expectations.  Students will be put into groups of approximately 5 students.  The teacher will go over the rubric with students.  The teacher will demonstrate basics of Prezi.com and Power Point, and students will pick what presentation program they would like to use.

 Students will read trade books provided by the teacher as a group to get a better understanding about their topic.  Students will make an outline and plan what they are going to do for their project. (The trade book topic points will be a basis for what subtopics need to be covered.  The students will assign certain parts to group members so that everyone has a vital part.

 Students will get their outline/plan checked and approved by the teacher.  The teacher will pass out a laptop to each group and students will be able to do more research on their project.  Students will start their work using the presentation program that they chose to use.

 Students will continue working on their presentation, inserting all text needed. The teacher helps where necessary.  Any costumes or art needed for the project designated group members may work on.  If any extra time, students should practice presentations.

 The teacher will review how to insert an image into a Prezi or Power Point Presentation.  Students will insert at least one image into their project, and make any other finishing touches to their presentation.  Students will rehearse their own part and as a group.  Students will also have the opportunity to practice their presentation with the Smart board. (We did this during silent reading time)

 Groups will present their project to the class.  Presentations will take between 5 to 10 minutes.
