Scene Setting In Northern Ireland 7000 lives lost due to road collisions over last 30 years On average 150 deaths & 1600 serious injuries on NI roads yearly Each year over 3000 people are killed on UK roads 95% of all accidents are caused by human error

Scene Setting In 2004 there were 26 deaths from road traffic accidents Deaths in males is higher than in females Young males (15-25) accounted for 35% of deaths in 2003 and 15% in 2004

Strategic Targets “ To reduce the death rate from accidents in people of all ages by at least one fifth between 2000 and 2010” (IfH Strategy 2002) “To reduce deaths and serious accidents by 33% from the average for the period 1996- 2000” (NI Road Safety Strategy 2002-2012)

Institute of Advanced Motorists Negotiations with Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Voluntary UK based organisation that administers the Advanced Driving Test IAM motto “Skill with Responsibility”

Safer Drivers SHSSB wide Initiative 3 year commitment £50 funded towards young drivers between 18 and 26 years to undertake the “Institute of Advanced Motorists” Advanced Driving Test (Normal price £75 for under 26 year olds) IAM Observers act on a voluntary basis

Demand out-weighed supply 2nd & 3nd Year of programme “Roadwise” to be utilised (Non-profit making business) Double yearly targets of young drivers obtaining the Advanced Driving Test Response

Current Status 16 Young Drivers have successfully completed the IAM Advanced Test 70 young drivers have shown commitment to the scheme 6 Courses completed with Roadwise Mid Ulster Group continues with a focus on young driver training
