1 January 31, 1865 Outlawed involuntary servitude Slavery was now against the Constitution political party that kept the money issue alive into the 1880s The federal agency designed to assist former slaves in the making the economic adjustment to freedom was known as the Gave former slaves citizenship and civil rights of a citizen Guaranteed the right to vote and that vote could not be denied because of race or previous servitude. Required 50% of population to take the oath /Lincoln –Veto

He tried to end the fighting. He raised a white flag and an American flag. The Indians were massacred. 1864 – Cheyenne tribes wanted peace Chief Black Kettle led his seven hundred followers to Sand creek The Indians were attacked while sleeping by military “Kill and scalp all” -Men, women and children killed 1877 Nez Perce led by Chief Joseph led them toward Canada. They fought the army and went 1321 miles. They surrendered and were send to barren lands where most died from disease 1890 the Sioux Indians were inspired by the _______ An Indian had a vision that the Indian lands would be returned and the buffalo herds would return. The Indians were not allowed to perform this dance Sioux fled the reservation. The army stopped them at Wounded Knee creek in South Dakota. Men, women and children were killed by the soldiers. Divided tribal lands and gave small plots to each person. Indian children taken from families and forced into schools Kill the Indian and save the man Gave 160 acres to anyone who would pay $15 registration and cultivate land for 5 years 600,000 families claimed these lands Waved at the presidential election of 1877. A symbol for all the blood spilled during the Civil War
