Ethiopia is located in Africa next to the countries Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, and Sudan. Ethiopia is closest to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Location

Background Information Name: Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Population: 83 Million. Capital: Addis Ababa. Area in square miles: 472,000 square miles. Major Languages: Amharic (Official),Tigrinya, Arabic, English, Somali. Main exports:Gold, copper,platinum, natural, gas Ethnic Groups: Oroma 40% Amhara 25% Tigre 7% Somali 6% Other 13%

Geographic Features Geographic features of Ethiopia include mountain ranges, plains, and some rivers. Ethiopia has sharp mountains rising to more that 15000 feet. The land used to be flat until earthquakes and volcanoes occurred causing lava to move through the land. The land has some plains that are farmable and rives for water and irrigation.

Climate Ethiopia has a dry climate mostly sunny with short rains. Mostly dry all year round with little rain, most of Ethiopia’s water comes from rivers.

History Ethiopia is credited with being the origin of mankind. Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa, because Somalia attacked in 1977 Ethiopia’s development has lagged. Due to political upheaval Ethiopia suffered the worst famine in its history. In 1984 and 1985 over 1 million people starved to death in Ethiopia.

Government Ethiopia has a federal republic. Ethiopia’s president is German Wolde Giorgis, Prime minister Meles Zenawi, National defense Siray Fegisa. Capital of Ethiopia: Addis Ababa All of Ethiopia’s nationalities have representatives in the legislature. The Federal Supreme Court is Ethiopia’s highest court. Ethiopia has 9 divided states.

Economy Ethiopia has a GDP of $25 billion. Growth rate 8.5% GDP per capita $800 Major exports include gold, copper, platinum, salt, and coffee. People in Ethiopia work mostly by farming. People in Ethiopia also work in Service Industries like stores, shops, government offices, and the army.

People 83 million people live in Ethiopia as of right now. Major Languages: Amharic (Official Language) Tigrinya, Arabic, English, and Somali. Many Ethiopian people make a living by farming crops. About two-thirds of Ethiopia’s population lives on less than one U.S. dollar a day. Most farmers work on small family owned farms.
