Why colonize? What are the long and short term effects of colonization?

To establish a colony To settle a colony What is a colony? A group of people who leave their native country to form a settlement in a new land This new settlement is still connected to the native country

Think back to what you’ve learned in the past. What do you remember learning about the colonization of the United States? Turn to the person next to you and share what you remember As we share as a class, be sure to write down at least two things you remember in your notes!

Just as colonization happened in the United States, it happened in Africa as well Can you think of some reasons why countries might have wanted to create a colony in Africa?

Many different countries colonized in Africa, some of them included: Great Britain Belgium France Germany Spain Portugal The Netherlands And Italy Be sure to write down at least four countries in your notes!

Islam Christianity Hinduism And many others, including religions that are traditional amongst African tribes Be sure to add at least two religions to your notes!

Wolof Hausa Amharic Arabic Berber French Italian English Swahili Somali Nyanja Lozi Spanish Khoisan Malagasy Dutch German Malay And many more! Remember to write down at least three languages in your notes!

Understanding the culture of the colonial area Creating laws that may not be understood by the native people Maintaining control from far away If the colony does not succeed, the country will lose money Competition with other nations for territories Building alliances with other nations and colonies close by Write down at least two challenges in your notes!

POLITICALLY African countries were not able to create their own national governments while under colony rule When countries gained their independence, their governments were new and had lots to learn about ruling a nation

ECONOMICALLY Money earned from trade, agriculture, and natural resources were given to the ruling country When countries gained their independence, they struggled to gain economic stability (Somalia)

SOCIALLY Under colony rule, the borders that were drawn often ignored human geography. Sometimes the borders separated members of one ethic group, and other times borders grouped people together that did not get along.

In order to gain independence, many colonies had to fight against their ruling country for freedom Sometimes, once independence was won, fights among the ethnic groups would begin, causing tension and many problems for the newly developing nation
