Two Types of Communication
Interpersonal Communication – involves two or more people in some king of person-to-person exchange Mass Communication – involves communicating to huge audiences usually through mass media such as magazines, radio, television or newspaper.

Six C’s of Effective Communication
Clear: Ensure that the information is presented clearly Concise: Be concise, do not lose the message by being long winded Correct: Be accurate, avoid giving misleading information Complete: Give all the information and not just part of it Courteous: Be polite and non-threatening, avoid conflict Constructive: Be positive, avoid being critical and negative

Non-verbal Communication Skills Communication other than the spoken language including distance, eye contact, facial expressions, voice, posture, gestures. Distance – Space between your body and another person. Eye Contact Negative Non-Verbal Communication: Looking down, up in the air or away says you lack confidence or interest. Maintaining eye contact shows sincerity and confidence

STEP #1. Reduce Stress Anxiety is a good thing Focus on the message, not on being nervous Visualize your success Know your subject Practice Breathe Involve your audience Make eye contact with someone who has a pleasant face

STEP #2. Audience Analysis Who – who is your audience Purpose – What is the purpose of the speck? What important to the group? Why me? Age When Where Room set-up Agenda

Writing the Speech 1. Define your purpose & goals – what do I hope to accomplish? I want the audience to understand the ….. 2. Brainstorm Ideas Select a topic Make a list of as many relevant topics as possible, narrow it down Example – cowboys, guns, horses, pay, cattle drives, spending habits 3. Organize main points – make only one to four main points a. Provide information that supports the main idea 4. Expand on main points

Ask a question – “Did you know that one out of every five…” State a fact or statistic – “66% of all dogs spend their time…” Use a quote that is related and proper to the audience or occasion Make a challenge statement – “you too can be a millionaire by…” State a news fact – seek current news related to your topic/audience Tell an appropriate joke. Be very careful!!! Avoid sex, racial, religious or political humor. 6. Optional – Get the audience involved! Use a game Raising hand to questions Answering questions Standing up
