1799 French Directory had lost control
People lost faith in the Government because it was corrupt and their needs were not being met Napoleon stages a Coup d’etat = a military overthrow of the government

After creating a new constitution he called for a Plebiscite (A vote by the people which justified Napoleon’s rule over France 2. (1802) Napoleon appoints himself Consul for life 3. (1805) Napoleon becomes dictator for the French Republic

Sets up an efficient tax collection system and establishes a national bank B. Got rid of Corrupt officials and began a Civil Service Plan C. Napoleonic Code: Established Uniform and fair laws throughout France and revised the legal system emphasizing the revolutionary Principles of Equality

Sells Louisiana Territory to President Jefferson for $ 15 million B. Annexed Austrian Netherlands and parts of Italy C. Britain, Austria and Sweden created the 3rd Coalition and Napoleon defeats it and grabs control of (most of) Mainland Europe

D. Continental System Napoleon orders a Blockade of Britain to prevent all trade and communication between Britain and other European Nations 1. Wanted to destroy Britain’s commercial and Industrial trade 2. Blockade did not work 3. System hurt France and weakened the economy of Europe

E. Peninsula War Nationalist Portuguese and Spaniards rebelled against Napoleon (with Assistance from Britain)

F. Invasion of Russia 1. Russia Refused to stop selling grain to Britain 2. Napoleon Drafts an army of over 400,000 to invade Russia 3. Alexander (Russian Czar) is outnumbered and retreats toward Moscow 4. Russian Army conducts a Scorched Earth policy during the retreat 5. Harsh conditions (Bad weather Ruined cities) cause Napoleon’s Army to crumble. Returns to France with only 10,000 troops

G. 4th Coalition (Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria and Sweden) join forces against France
Napoleon defeated by the Coalition and is exiled to the Island of Elba

H. Napoleon returns to France and is defeated at Waterloo.
Napoleon is exiled to St. Helena

Rise in Nationalism Nationalism: Feeling of pride in devotion to one’s country 1. The Enthusiasm that Nationalism created in the people of France was a great power. 2 . The government used this energy to mobilize their resources throughout the country against its foes it created a whole new form of warfare. 3. One legacy of the French Revolution was it showed Europe the importance and how powerful Nationalism could be.
