PARAGRAPH 10: AS THE ONLY OPERATING LABORATORY IN THE FIELD OF GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIOTECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM, AND AS A MAJOR TRAINING AND INFORMATION RESOURCE FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, THE ICGEB UNDERTAKES A SPECTRUM OF ACTIVITIES REFLECTING ALL FIVE PROGRAMME AREAS [OF AGENDA 21]. AS A TECHNICAL ARM, IT IS CLEARLY IN A POSITION TO CLOSELY COLLABORATE WITH OTHER AGENCIES IN FIELDS SUCH AS INNOVATION DEVELOPMENT, BIOSAFETY, TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER, INVESTMENT STRATEGIES AND MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT, ACQUISITION AND COMMERCIALIZATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS, SERVICES AND INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES, AS WELL AS IN GLOBAL BIO-INFORMATIC NETWORKING. 42 TERMS OF SERVICE OF THE REMAINING TEN MEMBERS OF THE CSA NEW DELHI, 16 FEBRUARY 2005

“WE NOTE CONTINUING WORK TO EXPLORE ESTABLISHING AN INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIOTECHNOLOGY CENTRE [COMPONENT] IN AFRICA, TO HELP RESEARCH INTO VACCINES FOR THE DISEASES THAT ARE AFFLICTING THE CONTINENT”.

“WE SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE THIRD COMPONENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIOTECHNOLOGY IN AFRICA”. SECOND AFRICAN MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DAKAR, SENEGAL, 26-30 SEPTEMBER 2005)

WHY? SET-UP OF A CRITICAL MASS DEMAND-DRIVEN RESEARCH AND TRAINING PROGRAMMES PROVIDE ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOP ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INDUSTRY/LABORATORY RELATIONS ACT AS A CLEARING HOUSE FOR THE REGION ENSURE ADEQUATE SYNERGIES WITH THE AAB AND THE ICGEB AFFILIATED CENTRES MULTIPLYING EFFECT WITH TRIESTE AND NEW DELHI.

AND AN ICGEB COMPONENT IN LATIN AMERICA?
