II. TJ as President B.Reality 1.Marbury v. Madison a.All starts WITH Judiciary Act of 1801- John Adams appoints judges last minute (midnight) before he leaves office. b.TJ wants to appoint his own judges now…

II. TJ as President c.Controversy: The SC ruled that the Constitution did not give them the power to force the President to turn over the appointments. d.Impact: The Supreme Court’s 1 st interpretation of the Constitution led to the power CALLED JUDICIAL REVIEW!!!

2. Louisiana Purchase a.Background: America could now use Mississippi river and New Orleans thanks to Spain. Spain lost it to France. France wants to sell for $11.5 mil. b.Controversy: In order to buy, Jefferson would have to use loose interpretation of the Constitution which he does not believe in. He does it anyway.

2. Louisiana Purchase c.Impact: $15 million to double the size of America. – Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea explore the NW parts – Zebulon Pike explores the SW parts

3. Embargo Act a.Background: Britain came over to America and accused the captain of the U.S. ship the U.S.S. Chesapeake of harboring British deserters. Then, they fire upon the U.S. ship, killing Americans. Many want revenge.

3. Embargo Act b.Controversy: Instead of going to war, Jefferson issues the Embargo Act which cuts off all trade with European countries. c.Impact on America: It doesn’t affect Europe at all, and it cuts the average U.S. income by 50%. It is considered a major failure.
