2 What’s new? Acceleration in the growth of independence of schools + increased funding ??? (national funding formula) + increased responsibility (for school improvement) + changed role of Local Authority ‘There may be trouble ahead’

3 So what is the same? The contextual background to these changes

4 Culture not structure -Ensuring structures and processes underpinned by a culture of co-operation and high aspiration for all children (and all services); -Driven by leaders who ‘walk the talk’; Shared sense of common purpose

11 Unite to succeed – ‘sanity not vanity’ -Focus on early intervention / prevention; -Locally based, multi-disciplinary teams; -Wrapping services around child and family ‘Team around the Child’; -Common language, common values, common assessment; -Federations; -Clusters – LA or otherwise.

15 C4EO: Validated Practice - UK Resilience Programme, Hertfordshire 18 lesson programme aimed at 11-13 year olds Emotional control and emotional awareness, problem solving, assertiveness, peer relationships and decision making Significant impact on pupils depression and anxiety. Improvements in attendance, behaviour and attitude to learning Training programme for staff – 7 days at £250 per day

16 C4EO: Validated Practice - CHOICE – Children Have Options, Imagination, Challenge and Experience, Wakefield Target potential NEETs – Y4-6 30 week programme – funded by school, (Primaries pay £1,000 to be on the course) Multi-Agency support Very positive impact on attendance, behaviour and attitude to learning

17 We need to continually improve outcomes for children and young people – and not just attainment. Mitigate the socio-economic challenges in your community. Schools/teachers are the most important resource in any community, to improve the life chances of our greatest resource. Final Thoughts...
