Extreme Heat and Cold

Extreme heat and cold can be heat cramps, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, frostbite, or hypothermia. You mainly know if you have frost bite by the color of your skin. Hypothermia is when your body tempter is bellow normal. A heat stroke is when your body over heats and it is life threating. Heat cramps are muscle spasms in arms, legs, or abdomen that occurs when the body looses too much fluid threw sweating. And Finally heat exhaustion, which is extreme fatigue due to the bodies inability to regulate it’s tempter.

Some Tips Drink lots of water to replace the fluids you are loosing Keep out door activities to a minimum & take it easy wear light colored, light weight, loose fitted clothes Stay in the shade or in the coolest indoor area

Thunder Storms & Hurricanes

A thunderstorm is known as an “electrical storm.” Thunder is a loud BOOM that usually follows rain. Usually following thunder comes lightening, which is a dangerous to be around when near metal. A hurricane is a powerful rotation that forms in the ocean. Hurricanes usually occur near tropical regions and can cause major disasters.

Some Tips Hurricane Tips: Listen to a battery-operated radio/television Head to underground facility unless told otherwise Thunderstorm Tips: If outside during thunderstorm avoid isolated trees, sheds, or fences Don’t use electrically operated devices because they can conduct electricity

Tornadoes

A tornado is a long rotating column of air that reaches from a thunder storm cloud to the ground. They have very strong winds. Tornadoes can easily damage many things, including people.

Some Tips Seek shelter in a basement or underground structure if possible. Stay in the center of the ground floor with a room with no windows, or in a closet if there is no basement. If outside, seek shelter in a low lying area as a ravine or ditch.

Earthquakes

An earthquake is an intense sudden movement that breaks the ground into large sections. Earthquakes also have aftershocks that can result in more destruction. Injuries during earthquakes are usually from fallen objects.

Some Tips Stay beneath a desk/table and hold on tight Remain calm Avoid fallen power lines

Floods

A flood is spilling over of a river, lake, or ocean onto what is normally dry land. They occur in intense rain fall and fill over the bank of a river, ocean, or lake.

Some Tips Turn your main power switch in your fuse box off close the main gas valve off pack an emergency kit and dry clothing if and when officials advise to evacuate do so immediately Don’t walk or drive where water is running over or covers the road avoid under water power lines move to high ground don’t go home, and keep your power off until advised boil water for 5 minutes before drinking it

Water

You can easily drown in the water. Many drownings happen in pools, oceans, ponds, lakes, rivers, and bathtubs. Older kids are more likely to drown in ponds, rivers, or lakes. And younger children in bathtubs or pools.

Some Tips Learn how to swim or take classes to improve your skills never swim alone always swim with a life guard or buddy Don’t dive with out knowing how deep the water is avoid alcohole and drugs, or anything that could mess up your swimming ability beware of weather, don’t swim in thunder and lighting

Camping

Camping is a fun activity for friends and family. You get to stay out overnight in a tent outside and learn more about the wilderness and survival, depending on how intense the camping trip is. Some people camp in their back yard or some go to the woods.

Some Tips Wear protective clothing Don’t forget to pack smart Be able to recognize unsafe plants and animals Follow fire safety guidelines
