MY INTERVIEW OF JEFFREY THOMPSON M.DIV., MS BY HEATHER KONGIRA
3
WHAT DOES HIS JOB CONSIST OF? 50 minuet therapy sessions to deal with the underlying problems, clinical meetings to work with other departments to cover all needs, and LOTS of paper work
4
JEFF WORKS AS A THERAPIST AT TRIUMPH He feels that there are many important components to end domestic violence Shelter being the most important as the victim HAS to feel safe. Trauma counseling and education must also be provided to change the victims responses. Triumph offers whole care. Triumph helps to connect clients with food, shelter, and employment services. They also offer 24hr phone services to provide moral support when clients are tempted to use.
5
WHAT I ENJOY ABOUT MY JOB Providing therapy Giving a victim a safe haven Teaching a victim to survive without their abuser Making a TRUE difference in someone's life
6
WHAT I LIKE LEAST Relapse. Watching a victim return to their abuser is the toughest part of the job. The feelings of helplessness because I cannot make the correct choices for that client. Its their life and I must let them live it.
7
WHAT CAUSES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE /CHILD ABUSE According to Mr. Thompson there are several causes. Drug Abuse Previous Child Abuse Stress Unemployment Financial Stress Mental Illness
8
WHAT DO FUTURE SOCIAL WORKERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHILD ABUSE? That abuse is rooted in parental trauma. It is less of a moral dilemma than a learned behavior taught to them by THEIR parents. Judging the abuser does you no good. You MUST learn to separate yourself from the victims to be successful in your attempts to help them.
9
WHAT IS THE MOST ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF INTERVENTION? EDUCATION The way to end abuse is to educate and end the silence.
10
THE ONE THING I WOULD CHANGE WOULD BE…. To be able to discover what it is that causes a client so DESPERATELY NEED to be in a relationship with that man or woman.
