The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island at the mouth of the Hudson River.

The Statue of Liberty In 1871 Frederic Auguste Bartholdi envisioned a statue to commemorate America’s 100 years of independence. The statue was a gift from France to America, because the French admired America’s democracy.

Bartholdi imagined the statue in New York’s harbor with a glowing torch to welcome voyagers.

The Statue of Liberty Seven spokes in the statue’s crown depicted the world’s seven seas and continents.

The Statue of Liberty Because the statue was made in France and needed to be transported to America, Bartholdi decided to make the skin of the statue out of copper, to keep the statue as light weight as possible.

The Statue of Liberty Over time, exposure to rain, humidity, and sun caused the copper to change to a green color. This is called patina.

The Statue of Liberty Bartholdi called the statue, “Liberty Enlightenting the World.” There a a few things that The Statue of Liberty symbolizes.

Statue of Liberty For example, the broken chain and shackle at the base by her right foot symbolizes leaving slavery.

Statue of Liberty The tablet she holds represents law written down for citizens to see. The date on the tablet recognizes the date America declared independence from England.

Statue of Liberty The inside of the statue was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. He is the man that designed the Eiffel Tower. The stairs were recently rebuilt for safety.
