DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR PARENT/STUDENT COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 2014

23 CAMPUSES IN THE CAL STATE SYSTEM  All but 6 of the CSU campuses are impacted.  All but Dominguez Hills have majors that are impacted  All campuses use www.csumentor.edu for college applications and other information including financial aid.  Each campus has a web link to their website.  All campuses required completion of CSU -UC A- G courses for admission.  Each college has an minimum eligibility index found on individual campus websites.  DHS diploma with distinction and advanced scholar diploma align with the A-G requirements  Dublin High School students are given first priority for admission to Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Francisco.  If these are not on the list of preferred campuses, we recommend students include one of them as a “safety” school.

APPLYING TO THE CSU’S  Applications are completed online at www.csumentor.edu  When you have submitted one application to a campus, the “Express Mode” will auto populate applications to other designated campuses.  Application window is October 1 st through November 30 th for most campuses.  Non-impacted campus’ *may* extend their deadline.  SAT/ACT should be completed by November testing date.  Check individual campuses to confirm if they will accept a December sitting.

 Set up an email designated for your college and scholarship correspondence. BE PROFESSIONAL!  Have transcript and family income information ready before you start your application. BE ACCURATE!  Proofread before submitting/have someone else review. Common grammar errors: Names not capitalized, miss spelled course names, etc.  If you retake a class to improve a D or F grade, *only use the improved grade* in your application.  In the category “other courses” – add relevant courses you completed – ROP classes, electives related to your interest/major.  WATCH DEADLINES. Don’t wait to the last minute!  READ AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS AS DIRECTED BY EACH CAMPUS. WATCH DEADLINES! HELPFUL HINTS - COMMON MISTAKES

MISC TIPS  Spend some time exploring on www.csumentor.edu and visiting the individual campus websites.  Review the individual campus freshman profile. You should match fairly closely if you are considering applying.  Include a “backup” school with your top choices (remember DHS has priority at CSU East Bay and SF)  Visit the campus in person. Call ahead and ask for a student to give you a tour. It’s not too late.  Although you don’t write an essay or need recommendations for applying to CSU’s, you may need one for scholarships, campus programs, etc.  If required - allow enough time to prepare and give your teacher/counselor at least 2 weeks notice for a recommendation. Pick up a brag sheet outline to use a your guide for the information needed for the person writing a recommendation.
