3 Activity #1:Analyzing Inventions- Inquiry Students should select an item from the group below. In small groups, students should brainstorm ideas on how the item might have been invented. When the group comes to an agreement about how the item was invented, they should make a brief presentation to the class. Afterwards, the group should research the product and compare their original ideas with the actual process ITEMS FOR RESEARCH:  Pizza  Diaper  Bicycle  Telephone Scotch tape Hair dryer Paper clip Safety Pin

4 Activity: Activity 1: 45 Minutes Task : "Analyzing Inventions - Inquiry" Students should select an item from the group below. In small groups, students should brainstorm ideas on how the item might have been invented. When the group comes to an agreement about how the item was invented, they should make a brief presentation to the class. Afterwards, the group should research the product and compare their original ideas with the actual process. Findings should be written in a report (items - pizza, diaper, bicycle, telephone, scotch tape, hair dryer).

7 Patent Activity: 30 minutes Activity 2: "How to Patent an Invention - Visual Organizer" Working individually or in small groups, students should use the Internet or reference sources to collect information on how an invention is patented. They should develop a flow chart showing the process. Additionally, they should define the terms "trademark" and "copyright." As a large class group, discuss how these ideas are similar to a patent and how they are different.

9 Selling your Idea Task #3 Students should make an advertisement for an invention. It could be a poster, a magazine ad, a video tape “infomercial”. In the ad the student should explain:  How the invention works  Why the invention is beneficial to the public

10 Create your Own … Task #5-Students should: Identify a list of problems that may need an invention Students should select one and brainstorm ideas on how it could be solved-prepare list of items that needs to be procured for invention and procure it Construct the invention or a model and test it to see if it will solve the problem. Keep a log to record thoughts and work notes on the invention-include diagrams, notes to themselves and conversations with others.
