Bell Work: 8/19/14 Read the article “How much water do you use? Americans aren't sure, survey shows”. In 2005, what was the estimated average amount of water that Americans used per day? How is water usage related to the food we eat? What are two things at home people can do to cut down on water usage? Cite evidence from the text to answer the questions.

Standards Distinguish between the intended benefits and the unintended consequences of a new technology. Differentiate between adaptive and assistive bioengineered products (e.g., food, biofuels, medicines, integrated pest management).

Essential Questions to ponder… What societal needs have led to the creation of certain technologies? What are the intended benefits and unintended consequences of new technologies? Are we able to describe, explain & develop adaptive & assistive bioengineered products?

Clean Water Challenge It is important as scientists and engineers that we are continuously searching for new and better ways to make the world a safe place to live for ALL people. Part of the world is depleted of safe drinking water and it is our job to be caring and empathetic, putting ourselves in other people’s shoes. How would you feel if you had to search for clean water every day? What would you do? Now is the time to put a plan into action to help people with unclean drinking water to find a way to have safe drinking water. Challenge: Design an invention that would change dirty water into fresh, drinkable water. Draw a blueprint, make a working prototype, and write an argumentative essay persuading a manufacturer to mass produce and market your invention.

Challenge Parts Follow the steps of the EDP: Research- evidence as to why people in a certain area of the world need your invention Blueprint- Full page blueprint completed on graph paper with proper labeling and description of invention. Prototype- evidence that your invention will work Persuasive Essay: Base your paper off of scientific research Claim for Essay- There are groups of people in the world suffering from clean water depletion. This invention would make clean water available for those areas of the world that are lacking.

Restate your problem State what you already know List any limitations or controls

State some possible solutions to the problem Research statistics about areas with unsafe drinking water and information about solutions to clean water. Here, let me give you a few statistics…

1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe water, this is roughly one sixth of the world's population.

400 million children with no access to safe water ( 1 in 5)

1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation.

1 billion people are without safe drinking water; Americans consume 26 billion liters of BOTTLED water annually

Clean water and sanitation for all- $9 billion; Americans spend that much the day after Thanksgiving shopping for Christmas presents.

Bell Work: 8/20/14 Read the introduction and the section titled “All Water is Not the Same” from the article “For many of the world's poor, drinking water can kill”. Which sentence from the article provides the BEST evidence of this statement: “When drinking bad water sometimes children can die, so I worry because (my children could) suffer," Petronella told Derek Watson, the film's director. “I, myself, could suffer from drinking bad water." Please only look in the introduction and the selection “All Water is Not the Same”!

What is Our Goal? Our goal is to raise $1000 between the five STEM classes to give 1,000 people in Africa clean water. If we reach our goal of $1000, the student that raises the most money from each mini-school gets to throw 1000 calories worth of whipped cream pie in their STEM teacher’s face. The class that raises the most money gets bragging rights and will be spotlighted on morning announcements.
