1. RECIDIVISM at the JACKSON COUNTY ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL

2. The Jackson County Alternative School Offers: Increased structure for constant interaction. Behavior Modification based on level system to increase positive behavior and decrease negative behavior through the use of rewards and punishments. Crisis intervention. Counseling. Parent contact and referrals.

3. Continued – Jackson County Alternative School Offers: Anger Management, Harassment, Communication, and Bullying lessons. Drug Education. Empathetic, yet firm environment where the student is genuinely nurtured and valued. Students are encouraged and helped to learn from their mistakes. Students are held accountable for their behavior.

4. POPULATION: 67% of students respond well to their placement by demonstrating improved behavior, mood, self confidence and academic performance. 33% do not respond or either respond during Alternative Placement. Referrals to other agencies may deem appropriate. Collaborative relationships exists with Judge Sigalas at Jackson County Youth Court. Averages 150 students per school year.

5. Continued - Population 2009-2010 SY has 106 placements to date. 33% (32) students are repeat placements. 14 students have two (2) repeat placements. 12 students have three (3) repeat placements. 6 students have four (4) repeat placements.

6. PLACEMENT BY SCHOOLS: SMMS – 17 placements; 3 repeat placements. SMHS – 32 placements; 14 repeat placements. VCMS – 19 placements; 3 repeat placements. VCHS – 12 placements; 6 repeat placements. ECMS – 13 placements; 1 repeat placement. ECHS – 13 placements; 5 repeat placements.

7. DISCIPLINE NOTICES: 264 Discipline notices written. 47% (123) by repeat group with 21% (26) of those by 4 Special Education students. 32 students had repeat placements. 23 are involved with Youth Court and/or Department of Human Services.

8. ADDITIONAL SERVICES: Homebound placement has been initiated to provide a temporary removal from the school setting. This service insures that academics and student contact will continue. Homebound teachers have observed situations that warranted reports to the Department of Human Services. Time will allow a determination to be made as to the impact these changes have made.
