6
Time begins immediately post-trauma Creates need for medical and psychological relief Survivors feel out of control, but may feel to blame Results in lower self-esteem due to physical loss
7
Crisis can result in isolation from family, friends, other social interactions. The unknown becomes overwhelming Survivors seek comfort through negative and positive outlets (counseling, drugs, alcohol) Wide range of emotions: loss, grief, anger, denial, remorse – Experiences of emotion? Survivors look to gain control, confidence, patience, and coping strategies
8
Comes as crisis levels off, sense of some control returns Desire to return to pre-injury life, pressure from family to return as well Often not willing to accept new role ◦ Begin to experience stigma and limitations ◦ Can lead to depression, drug/alcohol abuse, isolation
9
Often have problem accepting new condition Task is to move toward acceptance and identify new role – Experiences? ◦ Redefine Activities of Daily Living (ADL) ◦ Enriching (Exercise, Reading, Church) ◦ Social ◦ Employment activities ◦ Look for what you CAN DO, need family help and understanding

11
The stage marks acceptance of disability as a life-long experience. Acceptance leads to: ◦ acknowledgement of chronicity ◦ can and can’t do ◦ priority of responses (afraid of stigma vs. need to work) ◦ take responsibility
12
Start to advance in new found role and understand new abilities/limitations Family can support attempts, success, bravery Experience?
13
Begin to incorporate pre-injury self Find new ways of defining self and success Have new definition of life and understand disability is only one part of life Periods of relapse may occur, but knowledge has been gained
14
Survivors are able to perform: ◦ Activities of Daily Living (ADL) ◦ Enriching ◦ Social ◦ Employment activities Family can remain emotionally supportive and assist in activities - Experience? Family is able to cope and reattach to the survivor

16
The phases have direct relation to coping emotionally Anger, fear and depression are prevalent throughout the phases Moving toward acceptance is made more difficult by emotional and mental blocks
17
Finding coping strategies, outlets is important in being able to define your new role Family, friends, and other support can aid in advancing through stages and dealing with emotion
18
Entering a new social role is the best way to avoid stagnation Isolation can lead to depression and fear Finding new meaning and direction can help overcome doubt and anxiety
19
How closely do the four phases come to your experiences? In which stage would you place yourself currently? What emotions are you currently experiencing and how do you cope with that emotion? How have your role and direction changed as a result of being in or completing one of the phases?
