Europe in Southeast Asia and India l In 1510 the Portuguese seized Goa in India, Ormuz, Aden and Malacca. The Portuguese power declined in the 1500s. l The Dutch needed money to pay for the irrigation and to fight the Spanish. l A nation of merchants.

The Rise of the Dutch l The Dutch saw huge profits in the Spice trade. l They built Capetown in South Africa to resupply ships. l The Dutch East Indian Company. A monopoly of the Spice Islands. l The Dutch just wanted money and trade.

Spain Seizes the Philippines l Claimed by Magellan in 1521. Named after King Philip II of Spain. l Priests tried to convert native Filipinos. ( God, Gold, Glory. ) l The Philippines were a key source of trade. Silver from Mexico, helped to purchase Chinese silk.

India and the Mughal Empire l Babur founded the Mughal empire in 1526. Mongol in Hindi. His grandson Akbar added to the wealth. l India produced the finest the cloth in the world. l Religious conflicts weakened the empire. l The British and French move in and compete.
