15. Two koreas The peninsula’s history reflects that it was mostly an independent kingdom for much of its long history. Korea was occupied by Japan beginning in 1905 following the Russo- Japanese War. Five years later, Japan formally annexed the entire peninsula. Following World War II, Korea engaged in a civil war that lasted about three years. The war was a stalemate (nobody won) so it was divided into two countries.
