2.  Definition:  When something concrete (such as a person, place, thing, or event) represents something abstract (like an idea, emotion, or quality)

3.  Engagement ring =  Marriage, love, fidelity, etc.  Crown =  Royalty, power, wealth  Flag =  Patriotism, pride, liberty  Skull and crossbones =  Danger, death, piracy  Come up with two examples of your own!

4.  Look at examples #1-5 on your notes and consider…  What might an EAGLE symbolize?  What might a ROSE symbolize?

5.  Symbols are often visual.  When some event, object, or setting is used as a symbol, it often reappears throughout the story.  A symbol usually has something to do with a story’s THEME.
