Why were these books assigned together as an intro to PHILOSOPHY?

“WORLDVIEW” 1. William Golding – LORD OF THE FLIES 2. Daniel Quinn - ISHMAEL 3. Ray Bradbury – FAHRENHEIT 451 Research their background and analyze what ‘roots’ may impact their perspective on human nature Choose 3 ‘roots’ Write in your notebook how those roots could impact their worldview.

WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT HUMAN NATURE? GOOD? BAD? DOES IT EVEN EXIST?

HUMAN NATURE How do you feel about your ‘gut’? Your instincts? Human nature is innately… “Good”, “Bad”, “Not Real” What symbols, metaphors, methods did the authors use to express their philosophy on human nature?

HUMAN NATURE “There is more than one way to burn a book. And the world is full of people running about with lit matches.” -RAY BRADBURY “…It is certainly not a comforting book. But it may help a few grownups to be less complacent and more compassionate, to support_______, respect______, control______, and lighten a little the darkness of man’s heart. At the present moment it is respect for ___that seems needed most. I do not find it in our leaders.” -E.M. Forster on Lord of the Flies given a story Given a story given a story There's nothing fundamentally wrong with people. Given a story to enact that puts them in accord with the world, they will live in accord with the world. But given a story to enact that puts them at odds with the world, as yours does, they will live at odds with the world. Given a story to enact in which they are the lords of the world, they will ACT like lords of the world. And, given a story to enact in which the world is a foe to be conquered, they will conquer it like a foe, and one day, inevitably, their foe will lie bleeding to death at their feet, as the world is now.” - Ishmael What’s the STORY?

Philosophical Implications Reality / Truth Government God Morality If, then… If , then… If :-l, then…

ISHMAEL He could’ve tuned in, tuned in But he tuned out A bad time, nothing could save him Alone in a corridor, waiting, locked out He got up outta there, ran for hundreds of miles He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree The wind rose up, set him down on his knee A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw Delivered him wings, "Hey, look at him now" Arms wide open with the sea as his floor Oh, power, oh He's.. flying Whole… High.. wide, oh He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere But first he was stripped and then he was stabbed By faceless men, well, (naughty word) s He still stands And he still gives his love, he just gives it away The love he receives is the love that is saved And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky A human being that was given to fly High.. flying Oh, oh High.. flying Oh, oh He’s…flying Oh, oh “Given to Fly” – Pearl Jam, Yield

LORD OF THE FLIES Students should work in groups of 3 or 4 Create a visual (no words) describing Golding’s perspective on human nature and society (good, bad, neither). Extra credit points awarded Friday to the “Most Creative” and “Most Informative” visuals Visuals should be handed in at end of the period Use the following quote (fill in the blanks) to help with your interpretation: “…It is certainly not a comforting book. But it may help a few grownups to be less complacent and more compassionate, to support___, respect___, control___, and lighten a little the darkness of man’s heart. At the present moment it is respect for ___that seems needed most. I do not find it in our leaders.” – EM Forster
