- Kandinsky was born in Moscow, Russia. - He studied art in Munich and lived in Germany until the 1930s, when he moved to France. - Devoted time to the relationship between art and music. - He gave many of his paintings music- related names such as Improvisation and Composition. After looking at one of his paintings resting on its side, he discovered that colors and shapes can stand on their own as subjects of art. He was the first artist to abandon recognizable reality and paint abstract canvases.

Rhythm and Movement Rhythm is created by repeated shapes and/or lines. Kandinsky used rhythm to create visual movement. Viewers eye is pulled through a work by a rhythm of beats (colors, shapes, lines) and rests. What types of lines and shapes do you see? What colors do you see? Composition VIII, 1923

Color Kandinsky practiced his art. He learned what different colors do when they were placed beside each other. He used: –Primary colors –Secondary colors –Analogous and complementary colors –He used values (tints and shades) Then he studied RYTHYM and MOVEMENT
