What is a Coat of Arms? A Coat of Arms is based on HERALDRY - a system in which inherited symbols, or devices, called charges are displayed on a shield for the purpose of identifying individuals or families.

3 What is a Coat of Arms? Dates back to the early Middle Ages
Knights painted this personal mark on their shields Functioned as “team uniforms” Became symbols of their owners and of their families Applied to tunics, saddle blankets, banners, tapestries, signs, coins, jewelry – you get the picture? Soon, it became fashionable to have a Coat of Arms, so people hired artists to design them.

4 Coat of Arms Coats of Arms were not just for soldiers!
Others who adopted them were: Priests, Women, Towns and cities, and Tradesmen. In an era when few people could read or write, Coats of Arms made it easy to recognize each others’ marks.
