What was Apartheid? Apartheid was an official policy of segregation put into place in 1948 by the South African government that separated blacks/coloreds from the white ruling class Apartheid is an Afrikaans word which means “apartness”

Restrictions Under Apartheid Only White South Africans were allowed to votes Only white South Africans could hold public office No interracial marriage or relationships Black/Coloreds must carry a passbook into white areas which gave them permission to be there

Racial Categories White (European): Only 17 % of population but owned 87% of the land Black (African): 70% of the population; treated the worst Asian (mainly Indian or Chinese) Colored (people of mixed race 13 % of the population

Timeline of Events 1948: National Party wins elections and makes Apartheid law 1958: Government assigns blacks to “reserves” (aka “homelands”) –Split apart families (many blacks had to work outside the reserves –The Homelands become the center for the resistance movement African National Congress (****most important) Pan African Congress Black Consciousness Movement

Timeline of Events 1986-1989: Government cracks down on resistance movements with mass arrests, torture, and fixed trials –Trade embargoes are put up against South Africa by countries who disagree with Apartheid 1990: Government legalizes the African National Congress and releases important leaders from prison (Nelson Mandela)

Timeline of Events 1994: First all party elections are held in South Africa April 27, 1994: Nelson Mandela is elected as the first black president of South Africa

Legacy of Apartheid The country still suffers from inequality among the races, but are working towards equality for all.
