Why is this work important?

Formal F & P Running Records Recorded on Yellow Card Must follow Fountas and Pinnell Guidelines Should not interrupt regular instruction Should find the highest instructional level on each student Must complete on each student by the end of the year

Coding Page 12

Let’s give it a try! Listen as we read The Loose Tooth. Code the text using the “Conventions for Coding.” Check your coding against the original.

“For teachers, the most useful aspect of errors is that people do not make them randomly. There is always a reason for them. If you can figure out the reason, then you know where best to use your instructional expertise and how to avoid confusing the student.” Johnston, P. (2000).Running Records: A Self-Tutoring Guide. Portland, Maine: Stenhouse Publishers.

Jigsaw Get in a triad. Decide who will read about meaning, syntax, and visual cues on pages 13-15 (primary) and 13-18 (intermediate). Read. Small group share out. Whole group share out on posters.

Let’s Analyze! We’ll work together on pages 2-4. Now, you try it with the people you’re sitting with. Let’s share what we found.

Instructional Implications Talk at your table about the reader. What would be your plan for working with this student? Share out.

Comprehension Comprehension as per Fountas and Pinnell is a conversation. You are to use prompts as needed. You score understandings with or without a prompt.
