Globalisation is a powerful factor in influencing the way people live and interact with each other It has both positive and negative impacts across many areas, including politics, economics, the environment, technology, and society It involves the increase on a global scale of: ◦ Goods: clothing made in sweatshops ◦ Services: telemarketing from India ◦ Labour: low-skilled labour moving “offshore” ◦ Capital: fiscal spending to prevent recession ◦ ICT: instantaneous communication

Immigration and emigration triggered by globalisation has had a significant impact on Australia’s national culture ◦ Immigration refers to the movement of people into a country ◦ Emigration refers to the movement of people out of a country Australia’s economy has been supported by large numbers of temporary and permanent immigrants ◦ According to AHRC (2008), in 2007-08, 149 635 new settlers arrived in Australia from overseas ◦ In 2007-08, 56 575 people already on temporary visas were granted visas allowing them to stay permanently
