Tuesday, January 28, 2014 Take out the following: Pencil Planner (p. 85) Highlighter Chemistry Workbook page 17
2
Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures
3
Matter Pure Substance Mixture Element Compound
This should take up the entire page. You will be adding notes to each box. Copy this graphic organizer into your workbook on page 17. Pure Substance Mixture Element Compound
4
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
5
Pure Substance Made ONLY of elements!
6
Textbook pages 38-41 Read pages 38-41
DO NOT READ Heterogeneous or Homogenous Mixtures on page 41 Fill in the boxes on your graphic organizer Definition 2 facts 2 examples
7
As I go through these notes
Highlight any information you have that is the same Add any information you don’t have.
8
Element Made of one type of atom.
9
Compound HCl (hydrochloric acid) H2O C6H12O6 (sugar)
Two or more elements chemically combined. (forms a new substance) Can only be separated by a chemical reaction. (chemical bonds get broken) Examples: C6H12O6 (sugar) HCl (hydrochloric acid) H2O
10
Mixture Can be made of elements and/or other non-pure substances.
Physically combined Can only be physically separated Examples: dissolved in water, melted together, mixed together in container No new substance is formed
11
Solution Type of mixture All substances evenly distributed
Examples: sugar water, salt water, bronze (copper and zinc are melted together)
12
Identify the following examples…
You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element, compound, mixture, or solution. Review: An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. A solution is a mixture where all the substances are mixed together evenly.

Let’s Review! Match each diagram with its correct description. Diagrams will be used once. For each number write the name (For example: Pure Element) and draw the picture that matches. You do not have to write the definition.
42
Correct any answers you missed
43
COPY THE EXAMPLES INTO YOUR WORKBOOK!!
Let’s Review….a little bit more Classify each of the following as elements (E), compounds (C), mixtures (M), or solutions (S). Write the letter X if it is none of these. COPY THE EXAMPLES INTO YOUR WORKBOOK!! ___Pail of Garbage ___Pizza ___A dog ___Dry Ice (CO2) ___Ammonia (NH3) ___Baking Soda (NaHCO3) ___Kool-aid ___Titanium (Ti) ___Salt (NaCl) ___Iced Tea ___Energy ___Gold (Au)

Tomorrow you will be separating a mixture
Tomorrow you will be separating a mixture. Let’s look at some examples and brainstorm ideas on how you can separate the following mixtures.
46
Mixture #1: fruit salad Talk with your group for 1 minute!
47
Mixture #2: Salt Water Talk with your group for 1 minute!
48
Mixture #3: mud puddle (Dirt and water) *Not the kid!
