January 2, 2009 Worship Team

But I’m not the worship leader...  Many of same responsibilities as leader minus booking practices, choosing songs  Responsible for private worship, leading corporate worship, facilitating worship, flow, eliminating distractions, etc.  See all of the previous workshops for more

Practices  Learn songs sent by leader, especially new ones (listen to song, practice chords, learn beat/rhythm, etc.)  Setup and be ready for practice start time (help others, sound check, photocopies, etc.) Also help with tear downs

Practices  Practice your craft and strive for excellence Psalm 33:3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.  Save own practicing for private time; rehearse at worship practices  Be patient!

Team conflicts  Relationships, methodology GoodNot so good Learn new ways of doing things Stubbornness, unwillingness to learn, stuck in a mould Build, develop relationshipsBroken relationships Feel encouraged, lovedFeel tense, cynical, upset, burned out Deeper understanding of God, self, others Quit Increased worshipDecreased worship

Team conflicts Ephesians 4:26-32 26"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. 28He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. 29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Team conflicts Matthew 5:21-24 21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. 23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

Team conflicts 1 Corinthians 13 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails.

Team conflicts Galatians 5:22-25 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Team conflicts Acts 15:36-41; 2 Timothy 4:11 36Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the brothers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing." 37Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. 11Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.

Team conflicts  Steps Go to one another right away  don’t let tension fester and grow Go to one another and to no one else  don’t spread it unless absolutely necessary Go in private  respect, don’t humiliate

Common Worship Team Problems  Chronic tardiness Is the leader on time? Is rehearsal time/location a problem? Does everyone have a ride? Are team members overcommitted to other responsibilities? Do people understand the value and importance of practices?

Common Worship Team Problems  Team lacks closeness Sharing, bible studies Meet outside practices to fellowship  Member with significant sin still wants to lead worship Is it ok for bible study leaders? Prayer leaders? Restore through gentle discipline, prayer, counsel (Matthew 18) Don’t jeopardize spiritual life

Common Worship Team Problems  Out of tune singer Extra help, lessons Redirect to other ministries by accurately assessing gifts, strengths Don’t give false illusion of contributions Talk discretely  Team members resist leadership Romans 13:1 Gain trust, respect Servant leadership
