Variety: Amish Snap Strengths: Vines grow 5 to 6 feet tall (1.5 to 1.8 meters tall) Produces for more than six weeks if picked regularly Bonus: Sweet Drawbacks: If it gets hot, they’ll stop producing peas. They like it cold! Other: One of the oldest varieties of snap peas, grown by the Amish community in Pennsylvania.

Variety: Marrowfat Strengths: Vines grow to 4 feet tall (1.2 meters) Big, fat peas Bonus: One of Thomas Jefferson’s favorite kind of peas. Sometimes he planted them twice a year. Drawbacks: Ripens later than other garden peas Other: Instead of picked fresh, this pea is dried on the vine. The dried peas must be soaked overnight before being cooked.

Variety: Sutton’s Harbinger Strengths: Very early pea Produces a lot of peas Bonus: Sweet Drawbacks: Vines are less than 3 feet tall (almost 1 meter tall) Other: Won an Award of Merit from England’s Royal Horticultural Society in 1903
