1. The 13 original colonies
Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

2. Representatives from these colonies had to come together to agree on the Constitution in order to start the government for the new nation.

3. Rebellions such as Boston Tea Party or tactics like Tarring and Feathering tax collectors were often used.

4. Continental Congress (group of representatives) would meet to discuss and alter guidelines.

5. Colonists were fighting Great Britain for Independence.
Biggest claim: “no taxation without representation.”

6. Two Important Documents
Declaration of Independence:
Written largely by Thomas Jefferson (with help) is what gave U.S. Independence on July 4th, 1776
U.S. Constitution:
Written by a committee with many influences, James Madison being a leader.

8. U.S. Grows
Louisiana Purchase- from France on April 30th Sold to Thomas Jefferson for $15 mill. 828,000 square miles.
France’s Napoleon was battling Spain, needed $. Europeans wanted control of New Orleans (port city = big $) but he sold. Lewis and Clark explored land. About $.03 an acre.

9. 38 states total before 1877
Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, Arkansas, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, West Virginia, Nevada, Nebraska and Colorado.

10. Missouri Compromise (1820) said that all land north of 36 degree 30 minutes would be free and all South would be slave.

12. Dred Scott Decision- court case that decided people of African descent would not be protected by Constitution.

13. Indians
Battle of Tippecanoe (Indiana) saw Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa lose to William Henry Harrison.

14. Seminole wars (between Natives) numerous battles
Andrew Jackson beats Seminole, Creeks in GA and AL. Forces them into FL.

15. Indian removal act of 1830 said that all Indians had to relocate west of the Mississippi River.

16. Trail of Tears, over 16,000 Indians were marched from GA, AL, FL, and surrounding areas past ARK to Oklahoma (Indian Territory.) Over 4,000 died of starvation.
