Federal Aviation Administration 11 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 TRAINING EXEMPTION HOLDERS / PILOTS Hold exemptions to 14 CFR 103 (ultralight vehicles) Exemptions allows 2 place training vehicles, with higher weight and higher airspeed Pilots are not FAA certified, they follow a regiment set by the organization Pilots must carry exemption paperwork in the vehicles Major exemption organizations are ASC, EAA, and USUA Exemptions are currently set to expire on Jan. 31, 2008. No Longer Exist

THESE STANDARDS ARE ACCEPTED BY THE FAA. (NOT APPROVED) THE AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN GROUND AND FLIGHT TESTED AND ARE DELIVERED TO THE CUSTOMER IN A “READY TO FLY” CONDITION. Federal Aviation Administration 20 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 Reminder If your aircraft has Experimental Light Sport Operating Limitation (13) –No person may operate this aircraft for compensation or hire, except this aircraft may be used for compensation or hire to conduct flight training in accordance with § 91.319(e), until January 31, 2010, at which time this airworthiness certificate and operating limitation expires. Airworthiness Certificate will have an Expiration Date of January 31. 2010. Operating limitation (13) must be removed PRIOR to January 31, 2010 by requesting Amended Operating Limitations through the Local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). If this is not accomplished, the Airworthiness Certificate expires and the aircraft CAN NOT be re-certificated.

MAINTENANCE RATING TRAINING: TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A MAINTENANCE RATING AN INDIVIDUAL MUST ATTEND AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A 80 TO 120 HOUR FAA ACCEPTED COURSE, DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF LSA. Federal Aviation Administration 32 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 REQUIRED TRAINING FOR (LSA) REPAIRMEN INSPECTION RATINGS FAA ORDER 8000.84 This course will contain at least one module with six elements: (1) Regulations and other guidance applicable to light-sport aircraft, review of operating limitations, annual condition inspection record entry, a review of FAA Airworthiness Directives (AD), and Manufacturer’s Safety Directives and consensus standards. (2) Inspection procedures in Advisory Circular (AC) 43.13-1B, Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices & Aircraft Inspection and Repair, and use of manufacturer’s manuals, technical data, and personal safety in the work environment.

Federal Aviation Administration 33 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 REQUIRED TRAINING FOR (LSA) REPAIRMEN INSPECTION RATING FAA ORDER 8000.84 (3) Aircraft theory of flight and discussion of aircraft systems, to include proper operation and critical areas that are prone to failure or fatigue for at least the following systems: (a)Airframe, including instrumentation, landing gear, brakes, etc.; (b) Engine, including fuel and oil systems; (c) Propeller and gear reduction unit; (d) Accessories, including ballistic parachute; and (e) Flight control operation and rigging.

Federal Aviation Administration 34 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 REQUIRED TRAINING FOR (LSA) REPAIRMEN INSPECTION RATINGS FAA ORDER 8000.84 (4) Use of an inspection checklist provided by the manufacturer or found in FAA AC 90-89A, Amateur-Built Aircraft and Ultralight Flight Testing Handbook, appendix A. (5) Student course evaluation (critique). (6) The final test will contain at least 50 questions with multiple-choice answers. The test will have at least 4 questions for each major subject area taught. The minimum passing grade is 80%.

Federal Aviation Administration 35 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 REQUIRED TRAINING FOR (LSA) REPAIRMEN INSPECTION RATINGS FAA ORDER 8000.84 A light-sport repairman certificate with an inspection rating will allow the repairman to perform an annual condition inspection on an ELSA owned by him or her. The repairman’s aircraft class, registration number, and serial number will be identified on the repairman certificate.

Federal Aviation Administration 36 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 REQUIRED TRAINING FOR (LSA) REPAIRMEN MAINTENANCE RATINGS FAA ORDER 8000.84 The SLSA repairman maintenance rating training course is designed using modules of instruction that can be customized to the specific class of SLSA the repairman will maintain. There are three “core” modules, and five elective “class” modules. SLSA REQUIREMENT FOR THE 80/120-HOUR LIGHT-SPORT REPAIRMAN MAINTENANCE RATING TRAINING COURSE.

Federal Aviation Administration 37 FAA Briefing Light-Sport Aircraft April, 2008 REQUIRED TRAINING FOR (LSA) REPAIRMEN MAINTENANCE RATINGS FAA ORDER 8000.84 Five classes of SLSA are eligible for maintenance training. They are airplane, weight-shift-control, powered parachute, lighter-than-air, and glider. There is no maintenance rating for gyroplane. The modules are designed on 65-percent lecture and 35-percent practical format. To ensure a level 3 standard of training, the 80/120-hour course will be limited to 16 students per instructor for a lecture and 8 students per instructor for each practical project. The total number of students may be increased if the training facility is an FAA-approved part 147 school.

Module 2: Airframe General, 24 hours (Core Module). Must cover at least two representative aircraft for the practical sessions. Module 3: Engine and Propeller, 45 hours (Core Module). Must cover at least three representative engines (one water-cooled 2-cycle, one air-cooled 2-cycle and one 4-cycle engine). Not required for Non-Powered Glider.
