3  An artwork that is created, when geometric lines are measured and spaced out so that they will produce a design that is either drawn or sewn. These lines create abstract patterns or representational designs.

4  Developed by Mary Everest Boole around 1845.  She used “curve stitching” to help teach geometry to children.  It was a unique way to create curves from straight lines.

5  Pierre Brezier was interested in the mathematical side of string art  He used string art to develop and algorithm for lines along a curve  The "Bezier curve" is now very famous among graphic designers and is used all over for 3D graphics  The popularity of string art kits reached its peak in the 1970s when numerous households had a home-made string art picture on the wall.

6  A geometric design created by using a ruler and drawing straight lines. All of the lines created will result in a curved shape.

8  His designs show the connection between fashion and architecture.  All of his artworks are string instillations.  He has to think about color, shape, space, and composition when he creates his instillations.

13  Using string you will create you own string art design on a 9x9in. piece of matboard.  You will practice creating different designs, and come up with your own unique design.  You will then use string and sew your pattern onto the matboard.

16  Use the graphing packet to practice making designs and patterns for your string art project. Make sure you put your name on your packet!  Remember to use a ruler and a pencil to get straight lines  Create some of your own patterns by placing dots closer or further apart, and by skipping dots.  Use the blank areas to come up with your own patterns that you can use in your final project.

17  Symmetry - the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis.  Texture - the look and feel of a surface

18  Geometric - using simple geometric forms such as circles and squares in design and decoration.  Organic Shapes- shapes that have a natural look and a flowing and curving appearance

19  On the graphing paper provided, create an 8x8 inch square.  Inside your square use your graphing packet and other graphing designs provided to create a sketch of how you would want your string art project to look like.  Use colored pencils when creating your string art design to see what colors look well together. REMINDER: You can only choose 3-5 colors.  Remember to combine ideas and use your patterns in a fun and exciting way!

20 1. Pick 1 of the 3 sketches you created that you think is your best. 2. Pick either the black or white side that you want to be the background of your project. 3. Place your 8x8in. sketch in the center of your matboard. 4. Use masking tape or a glue stick to hold your sketch in place. 5. Start by using a push pin and following your pattern to create holes in your board. 6. Once finished remove your sketch and poke through any holes that did not go through all the way.

21 1. Pick where you want to start your project. 2. Chose the colored string you would like to use, and cut yourself a piece that is 3 arm lengths long. Remember: you can only use 3-5 different colors! 3. Thread the string through your needle, and remember to leave about 5 inches hang. 4. At the other end of your string tie about 3 knots on top of eachother. 5. Use the needle and thread and start sewing your pattern. Remember to start in the back so you don’t see the knot.
