There had been a heavy snow. The children tried to walk in the wagon tracks on the way to school, hoping to keep the snow level beneath the top of their poor boots. Every once in a while, one of them fell, and a little bag or package of books and papers would go flying into the untouched banks alongside the road. Then the child would stomp his way or her way over and fish out the remnants of wet paper and cardboard. Spirits were low.
