1 Math-8 NOTES Word problems: Warm-up:
DATE: ______/_______/_______ What: Proportional reasoning Why: To use proportions to solve a variety of real-life situations. NAME: Warm-up: A ratio is a _____________________________ of two numbers. A proportion is two ____________________ ratios. SOLVE (cross multiply, then divide): = 2) 3) 1) Word problems: SITUATION ANSWER (write a ratio and/ or set up a proportion and solve) 1) There are 24 red lollipops and 18 purple lollipops in a bag. What is the ratio of purple to red lollipops? 2) For every 3 girls at the dance, there are 2 boys. If there are 45 girls at the dance, how many boys are there? 3) For every 5 boys at the hockey game, there are 3 girls. If there are 200 boys at the hockey game, how many total people are there? 4) In Nate’s halloween bag, the ratio of chocolate to candy is 3:4. If there are 48 pieces of candy, how much chocolate is there? If three blu-rays are $54, then how much would 5 blu-rays cost?

2 Jack and Jill share a cash prize
SITUATION ANSWER (write a ratio and/ or set up a proportion and solve) Jack and Jill share a cash prize in the ratio of 2:5. If Jill’s share is $100, how much is Jack’s share? In total, how much was the original cash prize? __________________________ 7) Ms. Dyson’s car can go 45 miles for every 1 gallon. If she puts 8 gallons in the tank, how many miles will the car go? 8) The ratio of dogs to cats at the pet park is 8:3. If there are 24 cats at the park, how many dogs and cats (all together) are there? 9) Avery can type 55 words per minute. If she types 275 words, how many minutes did it take her? For every 5 trucks on the highway, there are 8 cars. If there is 205 trucks on the highway, how many total vehicles are there? The scale on a set of blueprints is 1 cm. = 3.5 ft. If the length of the kitchen is 4 cm. on paper, how long is the kitchen in real-life? 12) The scale on a road map is 1 in. = 45 miles. If the trip is 202.5 miles, how many inches would this be on the map?

3 Math- 8 PRACTICE “proportions” DATE: ______/_______/_______
NAME:__________________________ SITUATION ANSWER (write a ratio and/ or set up a proportion and solve) Joe earns $18 per week. He saves $5 per week. What is the ratio of his savings to his earnings? 2. Guests at a restaurant have a choice of soup or salad with their meals. Thirty-five guests choose soup, and 64 choose salad. What is the ratio of soup to salad orders? 3. Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single basketball game on March 2, In that game, he made 36 field baskets out of 63 attempts (the rest were free-throws). Find the ratio of baskets to attempts. 4. The 1906 Chicago baseball team set a record by losing only 36 games out of 154 games that they played. Find the ratio of games won to games played. During Sonia’s trip across the country, she traveled 2,884 miles. Her trip took 7 days. Find a unit rate to represent the average miles she traveled per day during her trip. Randall recorded 8 songs on his most recent CD. The total length of the CD is 49 minutes. Find a unit rate to represent the average length per song on the CD. An 8-ounce can of tomatoes costs $ A 12-ounce can costs $1.75. Which can of tomatoes has the better unit price? If 16 men can build 3 cabinets in one day. How many men are needed to build 9 cabinets in one day? A car travels 150 kilometers in 3 hours. How many kilometers will it travel in 7 hours?

4 SITUATION ANSWER (write a ratio and/ or set up a proportion and solve) Kaitlin is building a doghouse for her dog. She is making the dimensions proportional to her own house. Her house is 54.5 ft. long and 36.4 feet wide. The length of her dog’s house will be 6.5 ft long. How wide will the dog house be? May earned $5.50 for selling 3 baskets of apples. How much can she earn for 7 baskets of apples? 12. A stack of recyclable newspaper 36 inches high will save one tree. How many trees are saved if a stack of newspapers 14 feet high is recycled. (Hint: change feet to inches; 1 ft = 12 in) The ratio of the scale model to the actual train is 1 inch to 48 inches. If the length of the railroad car is 80 feet, find the length of the scale model. A printing press that prints money can print 8,000 sheets of 32 bills every hour. If five-dollar bills are printed, what is the value of the money printed during an 8-hour shift. 15. The scale on a map is ½ inch = 15 miles. If two towns, Jackson and Lincoln, are 50 miles apart, how far apart are they on the map? Washington is 20 miles from Jackson. According to the scale, how far is Washington from Lincoln? 16. According to the label on a box of pretzels, a serving is about 1 ounce, or 12 pretzels. 110 calories are contained in each serving. Pete ate 30 pretzels while he watched his favorite TV show. About how many calories did he consume? 17. Rita traveled 1,250 miles in the first 3 days of her trip. At this rate, how long will it take her to travel 1,875 miles? 18. Angie wants to enlarge a picture. It has a length of 4 inches and a width of 6 inches. If she enlarges the picture proportionately and the length is10 inches. What will the new area of the picture be?
