11 WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? Develop skills to understand the complexity / and dilemmas. Develop a capability to handle combined information. To learn new ways of appreciating a situation, which called for the particular policy. If in doubt, seek assistance to aid understanding and application.

12 WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? Ask yourself, how will these changes impact on patient care? Will it improve or negate? Become fluent in policy and environmental influences. Sharpen your cost awareness and learn how to prove the financial worth and cost effectiveness of nurses. Horizons scan – look for new developments, trends, opportunities and threats.

13 SOME IDEAS TO AID UNDERSTANDING OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL POLICY Ask your professional organisation. Read professional journals and quality newspapers for ideas and analysis. Look for examples of successful implementation. Get involved with working parties / groups. Create a contemplative space. Read, study, learn, apply and implement.
