Acid Rain 8A1 Thursday 11 December 2014
2
Learning Intentions At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Describe how acid rain is formed Identify some of the effects of acid rain on the environment Come up with and answer a research question about acid rain
3
DO NOW Using your knowledge of acids and bases, predict what will happen when a dilute acid is dropped on limestone (calcium carbonate)

Combustion Conundrum (p.35) Results Colour of universal indicator: _____________________ pH: _______________ Conclusion Burning the match head released chemicals like _______________ dioxide and carbon dioxide. These chemicals dissolve in water to form __________________ solutions. A similar thing happens when _____________ fuels are burnt in power stations and vehicles. Rain is naturally acidic (~pH 5.0) but human activities have made it worse. Acid rain causes problems by increasing the rate of erosion of buildings and ______________. It can lead to the death of trees by damaging their ___________ and limiting the nutrients they can extract from the soil. Acid rain has been known to poison entire lakes in some parts of Scandinavia. Statues AcidicLeavesFossilSulphur
7
What is Acid Rain? Based on your observations from this demonstration, what do you think acid rain is? What causes it?
8
Acid Rain Acid rain is clean rain that is contaminated by pollutants in the air. Pollutants can range from burning of fossil fuels and coal, factory pollution, smoke, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and natural gases.

What do YOU want to know?? Think of a question you have about acid rain Questions could be things like: Is it all based on human activity? What are the effects of acid rain on the a specific ecosystem? Is there acid rain in Northern Ireland? Use the computer to research the answer Create a poster to teach the rest of the class about your question Posters should include: Your question A picture or graphic The answer (or answers) to your question
