Education/Training Necessary You are required to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education. You need to be licensed through the state you plan to teach in to teach children from infancy through kindergarten. The course curriculum includes art, literature, music, physical sciences, reading, and social studies. Professional development courses such as teaching methods, philosophy of education and psychology are usually required.

Skills Needs to have a natural ability with children such as: Passionate and enthusiastic about learning everyday. It’s your job to spark the desire to learn in each of these new students. Make each student feel special by taking the time to greet, talk with, and learn something new about them each day. Be able to provide students with reading and math background so the have the confidence to start first grade.

Earnings-What will you make? A lot of people believe that teachers’ salaries aren’t the path to great wealth. In Iowa you make enough to support a family and get by. It depends on where you live, though, because teachers in New Jersey and New York make between $60,000 and $70,000 a year. If you’re passionate about teaching, but you want to make bank, maybe consider moving to a more populate state.

Benefits/Health Care/Vacation The basic health care benefits that teachers receive are their trips and check up at the doctor’s office. Eye and dental care are not included in the coverage of health care. Whenever the students don’t have school, neither do the teachers. The kids vacation, is as well the teacher’s, except for teacher work days.

Employment Outlook Job opportunities for teachers over the next 10 years will vary from good to excellent, depending on the locality, grade level, and subject taught. Most openings will come from teachers who are planning to retire over the 2004-2014 period. Shortages of qualified teachers will likely continue, resulting in competition among some localities, with schools luring teachers from other states with higher pay. Outlook is overall good, considering that jobs are being cut allover the nation due to the poor economy.

Advancement Opportunities There isn’t many advancement opportunities as a kindergarten teacher. That’s because the only other options are teacher, teacher, or maybe even a teacher. The advancement opportunity as a teacher really only is your salary. Each year as you gain more experience as a teacher, your salary goes up a little more. With experience comes a higher pay.

Aptitude To be a kindergarten teacher you have to have an aptitude for working with little kids. You have to know how to be their friend, but also how to set rules and limits. You have to keep them entertained while teaching them at the same time. You just have to know how to make them smile at the end of the day with some new information in their little, fresh brains.

Typical Day A typical day for a kindergarten teacher varies for different reasons. It depends if specials are offered to the children (Art, Music, Etc.) at their school. Most teachers should expect to teach math, language arts, writing, listening, and learning skills. There’s most likely a nap time, so have different methods for them to fall asleep. There’s also snack time, so be able to prepare a snack. They’ll have recess, ad there’s probably going to be disagreements, fights, and tears. Be able to help solve the dispute between the kids, too.
