A Gift For Your Heirs: Getting Your Financial Affairs in Order Marrison, David L. & Bruynis, Chris L. 39 Wall Street, Jefferson, Ohio BACKGROUND: When a family member passes away, it is usually a very difficult time emotionally for family members. This difficult time can become even more frustrating when heirs begin to settle their loved one’s estate if the financial records are in disarray or non- existent. Through a new workshop, OSU Extension is helping Ohioans get their financial affairs in order for their heirs. This class helps participants consolidate their financial and personal information in an easy to use document and to learn how to write balance sheets, asset inventories and letters of instruction. GOALS & OBJECTIVES: To help Ohio residents get their financial affairs in order the following goals were developed: To develop curriculum for use in a 2 hour workshops. To offer 3 “live” workshops in 2013. To offer a Computer Webinar. To offer a train the trainer session for OSU Educators in the fall of 2013. The main teaching objectives of the curriculum and workshops were: How to develop a balance sheet. How to document your financial and personal accounts. How to compile an asset inventory. How to write a letter of instruction.. Chris Bruynis teaches at one of workshops in 2013. PROGRAMS HELD: The following programs have been held: January 7, 2012 (pilot test) in Ashtabula County with 19 attendees. January 5, 2013 workshop in Ashtabula County with 14 attendees. January 12, 2013 workshop in Trumbull County with 9 attendees. January 14, 2013 in Ross County with 5 attendees. March 27, 2013 Adobe Connect Computer Webinar with 11 attendees from 6 Ohio counties. September 4, 2013 “Train the Trainer” presentation at Ohio Ag Manager Farm Manager In-service with 30 Educators. MATERIALS NEEDED TO GET AFFAIRS IN ORDER: Personal & Farm Balance Sheets Asset Inventory Sheets Monthly Household Budget Advanced Directives Health Care Power of Attorney Durable Power of Attorney Living Will Authorization of Release of Medical Information (HIPPA Waiver) Hospital Visit Authorization Form Letter of Instruction Record of Important Documents Personal Information Relatives Personal Advisors Location of valuable papers Listing of financial, insurance, & properties (and how titled) List of money owed Funeral Arrangements ATTENDEE REACTIONS: One attendee remarked, “This program just saved me hundreds of dollars in lawyers fees!” Another attendee stated, “This program made me realize how important it is to get all my documents in order for my heirs--thanks!” IMPACT: On their end of class evaluations: 100% reported they will develop a record of important documents & personal information. 96.88% plan to write a letter of instruction to their heirs. 93.55% will compile an asset inventory list. 93.33% plan to complete a balance sheet. The attendees also self-reported mean knowledge gains between 1.50 and 2.3 (on a 5 point Likert scale) on program objectives as a result of their attendance.
