Exponents Properties
2
Warm Up Solve the following equations: 3 = 3x + 1 6x + 7 = 61 5a – 34 = -9
3
Objective The student will be able to use exponents and their properties.
4
Think, Pair, Share… Consider the following: Is there a way to write the multiplication of the same number multiple times in a more compact way? For example: 2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2, is there any other way we could represent this? If so what would it look like if not why not?
5
Exponents: 0 and 1 Exponents of 0: When a number or a variable is raised to the 0 power it simply equals 1. Exponents of 1: When a number or a variable is raised to the power of 1 it simply equals itself.

7
Multiplying Variables With Exponents When you multiply exponents you add them together: When there are constants involved you multiply the constants and add the exponents: When there are mixed variables, meaning more than one you add the exponents of the same variables together

Try with a Partner: Evaluate:
9
Negative Exponents When the exponent is negative the variable the variable is put UNDER 1 and the exponent becomes positive:
10
Dividing Variables with Exponents When you divide variables with exponents you subtract the exponents of the same variable:

Power of a Power Property When you raise an exponent to a power (power of a power) you multiply exponents.
