1 SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND ITS IMPORTANCE By: Cameron Grantham

2 SIMPLE SENTENCES  A Simple sentence contains 1 independent clause.  An independent clause is a sentence that can stand all by itself. Examples:  Jeff went to the grocery store to buy some milk.  Sally watched T.V. with her older brother.

3 COMPOUND SENTENCE  A Compound sentence contains 2 independent clauses.  It can be formed by a semicolon, colon, comma, or by a coordinating conjunction. ( List of some coordinating conjunctions: and, but, nor, and so) Example:  Matt played football with his friends and he made a touchdown.

4 COMPLEX SENTENCE  A Complex sentence contains 1 independent clause and 1 dependent clause.  A dependent clause is a sentence that can not stand by itself. Example:  After the stormed passed, a rainbow appeared.

5 COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE  A Compound complex sentence contains at least 2 independent clauses and 1 dependent clause. Example:  After Sam got an A on her math test, her parents gave her $20 but she did not know what to buy with it.

6 DIRECTIONS FOR TEST  Underline independent clauses  Draw a swirly line under the dependent clauses  Circle coordinating conjunctions, commas, colons, or semicolons. C A B D Answers for the Test
