2 Africa's Size Africa is the second-largest of the Earth's seven continents. It makes up 22% of all the world’s land mass. Africa covers about 12 million square miles. Africa lies along the equator.

3 Population Over 900 million people live in Africa.
The largest city in Africa is Cairo in the country of Egypt. There are over 9.2 million people in Cairo.

4 Countries of Africa There are 54 countries in Africa.
The largest country is The Sudan. It is in north-eastern Africa. The smallest country is The Seychelles. An island country off the east coast.

5 The geography of Africa
Africa has many different geographical features. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point at 19,340 feet in elevation. It is in Tanzania.

6 The lowest point in Africa is Lake 'Asal (502 ft below sea level) in Djibouti.
Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the is the world's second-largest freshwater lake. Its greatest known depth is 270 ft. The longest river in Africa AND the world is the Nile river. It runs 4,132 miles and empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

7 Deserts cover northern Africa and parts of the south.
The Sahara Desert is one of the largest deserts in the world. Rain forests cover part of central Africa. Rain forests are Africa’s wettest places Grasslands, called savannas, stretch from below the Sahara Desert to the southern desert. Savannas are hot and get very little rain.
