1 DO-NOW: What is a vaccine? Why do people get vaccines? How can vaccines help people in society?

2 Vaccine: any preparation used as a preventive inoculation to confer immunity against a specific disease, usually employing an innocuous form of the disease agent, as killed or weakened bacteria or viruses, to stimulate antibody production. Immunization: to make immune, especially by inoculation Inoculation: to introduce the causative agent of a disease into the body of a person or animal, in order to induce immunity

3 You will be completing a research paper about immunization. You will receive an article and an assignment in each subject area: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Completion of these individual projects will help you complete the overall research paper.

4 For your social studies project grade, you must complete the following: Close Reading A glossary containing at least 25 words DBQ Essay

5 In order to properly complete a close reading, you MUST do the following: While reading, underline any important information Left Margin: Annotate the text. Interpret the meaning of the paragraph, and write it in the margin Right Margin: Give your opinion of the text. Write opinions, questions, or comments in the margin

6 A glossary is a list that gives definitions of the difficult or unusual words found in a text. You will create a glossary for the assigned article, “Vaccine.” This glossary MUST include at least 25 words This glossary MUST include the actual dictionary definition(s) of the word This glossary MUST include a definition in your own words.

7 Historical Context: TASK: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates all vaccines to ensure safety and effectiveness. No federal laws exist, but all 50 states require certain vaccinations (Exemptions allowed) for children entering public schools. Proponents argue that vaccination is safe and one of the greatest health developments of the 20 th century. Opponents argue that children’s immune systems can deal with most infections naturally, and that the possible side effects of vaccinations are not worth the risk of safeguarding against non-life threatening illnesses. Discuss 2 reasons why children are required to be vaccinated before entering school Briefly discuss the history of vaccines Discuss at least 3 arguments for vaccination and at least 3 arguments against vaccination In your discussion, you MUST include at least 1 immediate concern and at least 1 long range concern of vaccination
