HUMAN RIGHTS Are they respected or violated?

WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS? In their Universal Declaration, they are rights which all humans have regardless of where they are from. They were adopted in 1948, right after the disasters of two world wars and one big economic depression. The Universal Declaration consists of 30 articles. What do you have to do? Make groups of 4 or 5 people. Read English-written newspapers. Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Choose ONE particular right. – This right can be stated in one article or in one part of an article. Put examples of news articles that describe the violation and / or respect of that right. Elaborate a Power Point presentation with all that material (written part). Give a presentation and open a debate (oral part).

Structure of the presentation Say the Human Right you have chosen. Present the articles – Source – Date Give a brief summery of each of them explaining why the human right is respected or violated. You can use photos and/or videos to illustrate the articles. At the end, give a conclusion and put forward two or three controversial questions.

How should you organize your work? As a group: – choose the Human Right and the articles. – make the presentation coherent: same format, sequence… Individually: work on your assigned article.

HOW WILL YOU BE ASSESSED? Individually and as a group. Speaking and writing. Items which will be assessed: – Fluency, pronunciation, coherence, relevance, variety of sources…

DEADLINES Turn in the written part the first day after Easter vacation: 8 th or 9 th of April. Presentations: from 9 th to 30 th of April. A specific calendar will be provided in due time.

Article 26, part 1. Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
