5 Session Objectives Understand that using Microsoft Word as a learning tool helps students to meet reading standards. – Determining the meaning of words & phrases as they are used in the text – Building reading fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, comprehension

6 Success Criteria I can: Use the Full Screen Reading Pane Insert Comments Highlight Text Use the Dictionary & Thesaurus Set & Use the Translation Tool

7 Full Screen Reading Pane What does it look like? Why would I want to use this? Options to help with reading text: Increase Text Size : Adaptive to students’ reading needs. Show One Page : Limiting view to only one page lessens amount of text student sees to eliminate anxiety. Show Two Pages : Traditional view to simulate book reading.

8 Highlighter Unfamiliar words Examples: 1) Words to look-up in dictionary, 2) Assessment of text difficulty Words that give clues to literary devices Examples: 1) Characterization, 2) Foreshadowing, 3) Alliteration, Assonance Sentences & Phrases Examples: 1) Identify organizational structures, 2) Text evidence, and 3) Patterns related to author’s style.

9 Comment Allows for students to annotate. Allows for teachers to explain or provide guidance.

10 Research Pane Dictionary – English Assistance US Thesaurus – Thesaurus English US Translation – Research Pane – Mini-Translator Toolbar (Bilingual Dictionary)

11 CP5: Differentiated Instruction Know ability of students, visual (highlight), auditory (Bilingual Dictionary speak text). CP6: Scaffolds the Task Providing extra guidance for students who need it (comments, access to dictionary & translation tools). CP7: Gradual Release of Responsibility Students/teachers can choose to decrease number of scaffolds as needed.
