HAZARDOUS COMMUNICATION - MSDS General Chemical Safety Chemical Storage Container Labeling Emergencies MSDS - Chemical User Information

General Chemical Safety Safety precautions when working with chemicals –Keep work area clean and orderly –Insure that the required safety equipment is available - PPE –Label all containers –Incompatible chemicals stored in separate areas –Substitute less toxic materials whenever possible –Limit volume of volatile or flammable material to the minimum required –Spill containment equipment and material available at all times –Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) available and reviewed before use

Chemical Storage The separation of chemicals during storage is necessary to reduce the possibility of chemical reactions caused by accidental mixing. Use either distance or barriers to isolate chemicals in the following groups: –Liquids require - secondary containment –Flammable liquids require - fire rated lockers –Acids - Keep Away From - Bases –Corrosive material on the bottom shelf Explosives stored out doors

Container Labeling It is extremely important that all chemical containers are properly labeled. The following requirements apply: –labels, tags or markings MUST indicate Chemical Name Health and Safety Hazards Any additional information required for the user –labels, tags, etc... must be maintained in a legible condition –incoming chemicals must be checked for proper labeling –portable containers for immediate use are not required to be labeled

Emergencies In case of an emergency, spill, chemical reaction etc… implement the “Emergency Action Plan” Evacuate everyone from the area Isolate the area If material is flammable, turn off ignition & heat sources Call for HAZMAT Team assistance - EH&S ext.3-3549 or 3-3531

Material Safety Data Sheet “MSDS”
