1 Do Now 1.What is the daily grade and how do you get 100% of your daily grade points? 2.What should you do if you are not happy with your test grade? 3.What is the late work policy? 4.How many days are in a week? If there are 4 full weeks in a month, how many days are in that month?

2 Objective SWBAT explain that chemistry is the study of matter and energy SWBAT measure volumes and liquids and convert from SI to British units SWBAT construct the lab safety rules for a chemistry classroom

3 What is Chemistry? Study of matter and energy and the interactions between them Concerned with atoms and their interaction with other atoms Chemical reactions, bonds, structure and properties

4 What is that substance?! A scientist forgot to label his compounds (opps!) and now he doesn’t know what they are. See if you can figure out what is in the bags and graduated cylinders! Record your observations for each bag and graduated cylinder Make a prediction about what you think is in each bag

5 What is the substance? What observations did you make about the substances? What actions did you perform to make these observations? What did you do to try to figure out what the substance is? Make a prediction, what are the substances?

6 How to handle unknowns You can’t taste, touch or smell unknown chemicals If the unknown chemical is corrosive or toxic, this could be dangerous!

11 Lab Safety 101 Heat and Electrical Safety Keep electrical equipment away from water Know how chemicals react BEFORE you heat them Do not heat flammable chemicals When heating chemicals – The opening of the container should always be pointed away from you – Do not cover the opening of a container that is being heated

12 Lab Safety 101 Chemical Safety Never touch, smell or taste unknown chemicals Do not pour any chemicals down the drain unless told to do so Never mix chemicals other than what was instructed by the teacher Never put a chemical back into its original container
