2 nd – 6 th Rockstars October 21 – 25 Weekly Reminders 4th Grade Literacy – In Literacy class students will continue to learn comprehension skills, strategies to become better readers, and key vocabulary words. This week students will be able to determine the main idea and details of a story using a graphic organizer. 5th Grade Literacy - In Literacy class students will build upon their prior knowledge of comprehension skills, strategies to become better readers, and key vocabulary words. This week students will be able to correctly determine the cause and effect relationship within a story. Family Literacy Night - Monday, October 21 st (5:00) Family Literacy Night - Activities include chili/soup supper, recipe reading, reading craft directions, reading scavenger hunt directions, and sight word bingo. Canned Food Drive – October 21 – 25 Austin Tracy Elementary School is collecting canned good and non-perishable food items to donate to our Family Resource Center! Please send in any possible donations this week. 2nd Grade Math - My 2nd graders will be working on subtracting numbers up to 1,000 with and without regrouping and solving real-world subtraction problems. 3rd Grade Math - My 3rd graders will be working on subtraction up to 10,000 with and without regrouping and solving word problems. 2nd Grade Social Studies - The 2nd grade class will be studying about Americans moving to and settling in the west. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd graders will continue their study of the thirteen colonies. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will be studying the first people of Kentucky and Native American culture. 2 nd Grade Literacy I can use transitional words to signal order of events in a story. Given a main idea, I can develop multiple details to support it. 3 rd Grade Literacy I can determine the author’s purpose by reading a story and looking for clues. I can recognize the rising action and climax in a story. 2nd Grade Science I can explain how people hear and taste things. I can describe how the brain gets messages sent by the sense organs. 3rd Grade Science I can give examples of predators and their prey. I can give examples of what a food chain is and describe how energy passes through a food chain.

Bowen 5th Grade Science Classes – Fifth graders will be looking at ecosystems. 6th Grade Science Classes – Sixth graders will be working on conservation essays this week! Language Classes – Students will be conferenced with this week and discussions will take place about the scoring of their narratives. We continue to improve and begin work on passage based writing. Math - this week in math we will be multiplying and dividing whole numbers. Continue to work on your math times tables! Science - We will begin our unit on the water cycle this week! Writer's Workshops We will be finishing our Mystery Narrative this week and then moving on to Language Mechanics. We will also be doing a timed Open Response this week to get an idea of where the students are currently performing. 6th Grade Writer's Mr. Bad Habits in Writing has been taken to the hospital via 9-1-1 First Responders due to malnutrition. We are constantly reminding ourselves not to feed "him". We will continue to monitor the progress of Mr. Bad Habits. Daily Five Our theme for the next two weeks will be Point of View (POV). We will be discussing the different points of view and why it is so important to the storyline of the story. Reading Street Some of the 6th grade students are having a difficult time with the independence that is required through the Daily Five Management System. This week, we will be looking at the independence level of each 6th grade student and making a decision about which reading program is best suited based on individual needs.. Linder Math Fifth grade students are adding and subtracting unlike fractions. They are working with greatest common factors (GCF) and least common multiples (LCM) to find common denominators and simplify fractions. Please encourage your child to practice these two concepts this week at home. Drops in the Bucket are due on Friday. Social Studies Fifth graders will present their "Recipe for a Successful Colony" on Monday. In small groups they created a recipe that included ingredients and directions for a successful Jamestown settlement. On Tuesday, will begin studying life in the 13 British colonies. Sixth grade will finish up Central America and the Caribbean Islands. Students will begin working on a project about South America soon. We will be completing our Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Decimals chapter this week. The Ch 3 test should be Thursday or Friday. There are several links to websites on my webpage that the students have been using in class to help with this unit. We will review in class but they will also need to study at home.
