1 Third Grade Why we do what we do…

2 Science (Reading Text) Second Grade Text Before dinosaurs or people, sharks were swimming and hunting in the world’s oceans. They are still around today. Third Grade Text Each measurement and science observation from experimental or observational testing is a piece of data. For Example, the number of pennies on a raft is data. We use collected data as empirical evidence. This evidence is used to show whether a hypothesis is or is not supported. Scientists look for patterns in evidence to help explain the world around them.

3 Science (Math) 2. A student designs an experiment to test the force of a spring using a spring launcher and four spheres with the same diameter but with different masses. 15 g 10 g 18 g 22 g What other piece of equipment would be most useful for this experiment? A. A graduated cylinder to measure the volume of each sphere before the sphere is launched B. A beaker to collect the spheres after they are launched C. A stopwatch to measure how long it takes to load each sphere on the spring D. A meter stick to measure the height each sphere reaches after the sphere is launched SubstanceMass (g) Water125 Toothpicks 5 Table Salt 30 Sugar Cubes 20 Alcohol 98 Cooking Oil 75 Marbles 40 Plastic Cubes35 1. A student measures the mass of several substances and records the results in the table below. What is the difference in grams between the total mass of the liquid substances and the total mass of the solid substances used in the investigation? Record your answer and fill in the bubbles on your answer document. Be sure to use the correct place value.

4 Social Studies Second Grade Tony’s Uncle Franco is a hero. Franco is a firefighter. Franco tells Tony stories about fighting fires. Tony loves to hear the stories. Third Grade You have seen that different communities have different geography. They have different landforms, bodies of water, and climates. The people in these communities learn to live with the land, water and climate around them. Knowing about the geography of different communities helps us understand the different ways people live.
