2. History 1990: Bar coding and horizontal applications 2002: AIDC Technologies 2009: Re-launch of CEN/TC225 Scope The scope of CEN/TC 225 is standardization of data carriers for items using automatic identification and data capture (AIDC), of the data element architecture therefore, of the necessary test specifications and of technical features for the harmonization of cross-sector applications.

3. CEN/TC 225 takes account of the technical specifications, standards and regulations currently available or being prepared at international levels, in particular the technical work in ISO/IEC JTC1/SC31 (AIDC techniques) and ISO TC 122 (Packaging). Until April 2009: CEN/TC225 basically dormant (SC31 absorbed early European work on bar code standards) CEN/TC225 transposed some JTC1 SC31 conformance standards into Europeans standards to ensure a uniform level of implementation across Europe. All other standards were left to the individual European National Bodies to decide the basis on which to adopt the ISO standards at the national level.
